|
Since the Peer Mentoring program began in 2003, Living Wages has recruited 4 Beyond Talent Peer Mentors to work there full-time through AmeriCorps. 1 former Peer Mentor is now a regular Living Wages staff member. Another Peer Mentor entered the Steamfitters’ Union Apprenticeship program after Beyond Talent staff helped him find the program through online research. During the application process, Beyond Talent paid the $80 assessment fee and coached him for the interview. Today he is in the third year of the five-year apprenticeship, earning a living wage while in training for jobs with average starting salaries of $45,000 a year.
The following success stories demonstrate the effectiveness of the Peer Mentoring model:
Peer Mentor A, who had perfect attendance in the College Readiness Program in winter 2008, transitioned in spring 2008 into Beyond Talent’s Peer Mentoring Program. She volunteered as a tutor at Living Wages, her alma mater GED program. She later joined the staff of Living Wages as an AmeriCorps volunteer as a result of her Beyond Talent service. Since 2006 Living Wages has recruited 4 Beyond Talent Peer Mentors to become AmeriCorps volunteers, and 1 has become regular part-time staff.
Peer Mentor B, who passed his GED with help from Academy of Hope, served as a Beyond Talent Peer Mentor from 2005-2007. With assistance from Beyond Talent, he became a certified addiction counselor and earned an associate’s degree in social work from Southeastern University. He is now a case manager at a program he once attended as a participant.
Peer Mentor C helped 6 of her mentees complete alternative high school credentials in 2008; all 6 are now gainfully employed! So far in 2009, 3 of her mentees have completed the External Diploma Program. Read the Impact Report. |
