Beyond Talent Peer Mentor Joyce Hatcher, who volunteers at Notre Dame Education Center through Beyond Talent's Peer Mentoring program, has devoted literally hundreds of hours to helping her mentees follow in her footsteps and complete the External Diploma Program (EDP). Already in 2009, 3 of her mentees completed the EDP and will receive District of Columbia high school diplomas in May! One of them, Tamara, said Joyce helped her along the way. "I have known her since June 2008," Tamara says. "She has been very helpful to me in assisting me with the computer, and showing me the correct way to type a letter and resume. She is very resourceful and has been very helpful."
The External Diploma Program is another choice for an adult eighteen years or older to earn a high school diploma. It is designed for adults who are competent in basic reading and math, self-directed and mature, interested in confidentiality, practical and highly skilled, concerned with flexibility because of job and family commitments, and possibly uncomfortable with timed testing. The program requires the demonstration of sixty-five generalized skills and one vocational skill in order to earn a diploma from District of Columbia Public Schools. |
