Beyond Talent and Academy of Hope joined forces this summer to provide an expanded College Readiness Program to non-traditional students and graduates, and we are thrilled to report that 2 students in that program have been accepted to UDC in the fall!
Beyond Talent had previously offered the program in partnership with an area university who was not able to participate this summer. Academy of Hope was planning to offer a college readiness program over the summer and was looking for an academic curriculum. So the two organizations collaborated on classes, recruiting students and volunteers, and providing staff support and other offerings for students. Sasha Wilson, Beyond Talent's program coordinator, works with students in the College Readiness Program everyday. When they are not working on their personal and professional development plans, students can get help in other areas. For example, Sasha is currently working with two College Readiness Program students to develop their writing and research skills as they write research papers for the first time. "I have never written a research paper before," said Lancine, one of the students attempting his first research paper. "It is very challenging!" Sasha has also tutored a student preparing for the SAT. On Wednesday, June 25, Lancine and the other students in the College Readiness Program attended a workshop with Executive Director Ellie Phillips to learn about the college application process. On July 2, Beyond Talent invited Jessica Johnson of the Scholarship Academy to do a workshop on scholarships and financial ai for students in the program. |
