Beyond Talent is seeking volunteer mentors to help build our new Next Steps program. Mentors will provide guidance to a non-traditional high school student or graduate. “Next Steps” Volunteer Mentor Position Description

As a Beyond Talent mentor, you commit to supporting and guiding a recent GED or External Diploma Program graduate (age 21 or over) transitioning to college or the workplace.  You become a consistent, trusted face for your mentee and strive to help your mentee develop and reach academic, career, and personal aspirations. We are looking for caring, committed, and patient mentors who are willing to commit an hour a week for the first three months of the mentoring relationship, and at least 2 hours a month for the remaining 9 months of the mentorship.

Mentor Role

• Take the lead in supporting a recent GED or External Diploma Program graduate through an ongoing, one-on-one relationship

• Serve as a loyal friend, confidant, and advisor

• Give what you know with no expectation of reciprocation or remuneration

• Strive for mutual respect

• Help the mentee develop and accomplish goals and increase self-esteem

• Good listener

• Prompt, consistent, and dedicated

• Creative problem solver

• Encouraging and supportive

• Patient and flexible

• Tolerant and respectful of individual differences

Time Commitment

• Attend 1 initial 3-hour training session and at least 1 in-service training session throughout the year

• For the first three months of the mentoring relationship, meet with mentee once a week for 1 hour to develop goals, make plans, and provide accountability for completing tasks.  Meet at least twice monthly for remainder of year

• Fill out and turn in monthly mentoring logs

• Participate in feedback sessions with Beyond Talent staff member once every three months or upon request
