Beyond Talent hosted a special guest for a recent Next Step Workshop. In the three-hour session at Beyond Talent’s office, GED and External Diploma Program graduates learned financial aid basics from Jessica Johnson, founder of Minority Scholarship Quest and the Scholarship Academy.
Next Step Workshop participants take notes on navigating the financial aid process Beyond Talent and the Scholarship Academy hope to continue the successful collaboration, and are exploring kicking off a series of Next Step workshops. For now, Jessica continues to work with the 10 students who attended the workshop, who all were extremely excited about what they learned. “I learned a lot today,” said Jennifer, 17, who recently completed Beyond Talent’s College Readiness Program. “First I learned how to apply for a scholarship and what to write when applying for scholarships. I also learned that we should think before doing something because if you do not follow what they ask you to do in your application you may end up doing the wrong thing.” Workshop participants received guidance on the many educational finance options available “Today’s scholarship presentation was very helpful,” said Alice, 45, who was gathering information for herself and her son. “I learned that it is possible to attend college totally funded by scholarships. It also helped to know that you have to sell yourself when applying for a scholarship as you would when applying for a job.” “I basically got the fundamental information about scholarships and a whole lot more in regards to college,” said Tessy, 17, who passed the GED exam last year after studying at Catholic Charities. “The most important information I got was how to write a good essay and how to get a good recommendation from people, too.” |
