Eight Students Complete Innovative College Readiness Program PDF Print E-mail

The first session of the 2008 College Readiness Program ended with a bang on February 27, with a graduation luncheon attended by participants, their families, the professors, and Beyond Talent staff.

All eight students who began the eight-week College Readiness Program session on Jan. 7 received certificates of completion at the graduation in February.

With support from Beyond Talent, the participants -- all GED or EDP graduates -- completed eight weeks of college math and writing courses that will alleviate the need for remedial coursework at the college level.

In addtion to the coursework, participants attended biweekly workshops at Beyond Talent's new office, covering such topics as goal-setting and financial aid. The participants also had two one-on-one appointments with Beyond Talent's Executive Director to assess their progress.

The College Readiness Program graduates also met a host of their personal goals, including:

  • Updating resumes and learning online job-search techniques
  • Studying for and registering for the SAT
  • Researching and registering for a home health aide training program with job placement
  • Filing the online application for federal student aid (FAFSA)
  • Identifying colleges and beginning the application process

Just because the eight weeks of classes are over doesn't mean the College Readiness Program students are "finished." Beyond Talent will continue to work with each participant to complete the college and/or job application process.
