Beyond Talent Impact Report Highlights: Cycles of Success
Friday, 08 May 2009
2 students who enrolled in Beyond Talent programs in FY 2007 will complete associate’s degrees in May 2009. Another success story began 3 years ago, when a student who enrolled in Living Wages GED program after being laid off from her hospital receptionist job became a Beyond Talent Peer Mentor after passing the GED exam.
On March 25, Beyond Talent will honor our wonderful students and celebrate their achievements! We will also recognize partner programs Academy of Hope, Notre Dame Education Center, and Living Wages, and all of the wonderful supporters who have made the work possible!
Beyond Talent's AmeriCorps volunteer, Kate Landry, spends part of her time providing on-site services to Living Wages, a wonderful program for non-traditional students! Since September, Kate has provided 208 instructional hours and helped 30 students achieve their goals!
Beyond Talent Peer Mentor Joyce Hatcher, who volunteers at Notre Dame Education Center through Beyond Talent's Peer Mentoring program, has devoted literally hundreds of hours to helping her mentees follow in her footsteps and complete the External Diploma Program (EDP). Already in 2009, 3 of her mentees completed the EDP and will receive District of Columbia high school diplomas in May!
One of them, Tamara, said Joyce helped her along the way. "I have known her since June 2008," Tamara says. "She has been very helpful to me in assisting me with the computer, and showing me the correct way to type a letter and resume. She is very resourceful and has been very helpful."
By partnering with a number of providers, Beyond Talent reaches many underserved populations including the homeless, adjudicated youth, disconnected youth, and TANF recipients. Beyond Talent in 2008 expanded to include more "partners" -- sites who refer students, host Beyond Talent Peer Mentors or other programs, and collaborate with Beyond Talent to ensure seamless transitions for their graduates.
